Vasectomy Facts

What is a Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is permanent sterilization for men. It is performed by cutting the vas deferens tubes between your testicles and groin and sealing them with either stitches or heat (cauterization). The procedure is relatively painless and performed after local anesthesia has been administered.

Are the Contraceptive Effects of Vasectomy Immediate?

It is a common misconception that men are sterile as soon as their surgery is finished.  Sperm, however, may have traveled beyond the site of the blockage created during surgery and are capable of surviving for several weeks in the seminal tract before being reabsorbed by the body.  For this reason, it’s important to wait at least 60 days before running SpermCheck® Vasectomy to test the success of your procedure. You may also want to consider the use of additional contraceptives for the first six months after surgery.

What Is Recanalization and How Often Does It Occur?

Recanalization occurs when the ends of the vas deferens spontaneously reconnect and create a channel through which sperm can move.  Very few vasectomies result in recanalization, but it’s still important for you to run SpermCheck® Vasectomy 60 and 90 days after your procedure to ensure that it was performed successfully. Studies have also shown that, while rare, late recanalization can also occur.  It’s estimated that as many as one out of every 100 vasectomies performed will fail to prevent a pregnancy in the five-year period after the surgery.  Consequently, you may find it beneficial to run SpermCheck® Vasectomy after your initial sperm tests on an annual basis to test that your vasectomy has not reversed itself.

Why Follow-Up Tests Are Important?

Follow-up tests confirm your vasectomy’s success, and help you know when it is safe to discontinue use of other contraceptive methods. Yet many men fail to return for these essential follow-up tests.
